How Vitamins Protect the Lungs of Smokers

Smoking has a significant negative impact on the lungs, destroying their defense mechanisms and increasing the risk of cancer. However, scientists have discovered that certain vitamins can partially neutralize this damage, especially when taken in the right combination.

American researchers from Oregon State University studied the effects of vitamins C and E on smokers. They noted that vitamin E protects the lungs from free radicals found in tobacco smoke, but when combined with nicotine, it can be converted into a toxic form.

The experiment showed that vitamin C plays a key role in restoring normal vitamin E levels. Smokers who took vitamin C at doses up to 1,000 milligrams per day maintained plasma vitamin E levels at approximately the same level as non-smokers, while those who received a placebo experienced significantly faster vitamin E degradation.

Importantly, lung protection only works when the two vitamins work together. When consumed separately, their antioxidant effect is reduced, leaving lung cells vulnerable to damage.

The study's results highlight the need for smokers to include foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, berries, and vegetables, in their diet. This vitamin helps accelerate the restoration of vitamin E and support the body's natural defenses.

Scientists note that vitamins are not a substitute for quitting smoking, but they can significantly reduce the harmful effects of nicotine. Supporting the body through proper nutrition and supplements is an important element in preventing lung disease and other organs affected by tobacco smoke.
