European Parliament approves €90 billion in financial aid for Ukraine: first tranche expected in April

The European Parliament has approved a financial support package for Ukraine worth €90 billion for 2026–2027. The funds are aimed at ensuring the smooth functioning of the state budget and supporting the country's defense potential. This was reported by the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine.

According to the ministry, of the total amount, €30 billion is provided as budget aid to cover priority state expenditures, and €60 billion is directed to military support. Thus, the financing covers both the needs of the civilian budget and the defense sector.

The first tranche of assistance is expected in the second quarter of 2026. The long-term loan will be financed by borrowings by the European Union on international capital markets. Obligations under these borrowings will be provided by the EU budget reserve, which guarantees the reliability and stability of financing.

The Minister of Finance of Ukraine, Serhiy Marchenko, noted that the funds received will help strengthen Ukraine’s defense potential, ensure continuous financing of priority expenditures, and contribute to the country’s resilience in the current environment. He also emphasized that the support will contribute to closer integration of Ukraine with the defense-industrial base of Europe.

“I am grateful to the European institutions and everyone who worked on this decision for the rapid legislative process, which will allow receiving funds in April,” Marchenko added, emphasizing the importance of prompt financial support for Ukraine.

The European Union remains the largest donor to Ukraine: since February 2022, the amount of assistance to the country has reached 70.7 billion euros. The decision further strengthens the EU’s role in supporting Ukraine’s economic and defense stability during the ongoing crisis.
