Ukrainian car imports in 2025: average age is 9 years, electric cars overtake diesel

In 2025, the Ukrainian market for imported cars continued its gradual recovery, while maintaining the characteristics of the used car market. According to the study, the average age of cars imported from abroad was 9 years, and a significant part of the imports fell on electric cars and the capital region.

As Opendatabot reports, citing data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 444,860 vehicles were imported to Ukraine last year. This is 17% more than in 2024, but still about a third less than in the pre-war 2021, when import volumes were much higher.

Ukraine continues to be predominantly a used car market. More than 70% of all cars imported last year had mileage. At the same time, the average age of imported vehicles did not change over the year and remained at 9 years. For comparison, in 2021 this figure was 11 years, which indicates a gradual “rejuvenation” of the import fleet.

The geography of registrations also demonstrates the concentration of demand in large regions. Almost every fifth vehicle imported from abroad was registered in Kyiv - a total of 80,425 cars. Lviv region took second place with 51,730 cars. The top five regions also included Kyiv region (28,179), Dnipropetrovsk region (26,311) and Rivne region (23,608).

One of the key trends of 2025 was the rapid growth in the popularity of electric vehicles. Every fourth car that crossed the Ukrainian border last year was electric. In total, imports of electric cars reached 109,309 units, which exceeded the number of diesel cars, which were imported by 94,014. Demand for electric vehicles has significantly increased on the eve of the return of taxes on its import.

Despite this, gasoline cars still hold the leadership by type of fuel - in 2025, 195,059 such vehicles were imported to Ukraine. Interestingly, among the 504 luxury cars that fell under the luxury tax, half were also electric.

Analysts also draw attention to the diversity of imported vehicles. Among the imported cars, there were real automotive rarities - from the 1967 Honda Monkey moped to the classic 1971 Chevrolet Corvette. Even in the electric vehicle segment there are its "veterans": the oldest electric car, the Peugeot iOn, is already 15 years old.

By brand, the undisputed leader remains Volkswagen, which tops the rankings in 20 regions of Ukraine. At the same time, there are exceptions: in Odessa region, BMW unexpectedly took first place, in Chernihiv and Donetsk regions - Renault, and in Kherson region, the leader was the motorcycle brand Spark. Among models, the most popular imported car of the year was the Tesla Model Y.

If we consider only electric vehicles, Tesla's dominance is even more pronounced. This brand became No. 1 in 22 regions of the country, losing only to Volkswagen in Zakarpattia region, and in Sumy region - to the Chinese manufacturer BYD.
