  • Brain Structure and Adolescent Aggression

Teenager behavior often surprises parents and educators with its unpredictability and outbursts of aggression. Recent research suggests that such personality traits may be directly linked to brain structure, particularly the limbic system, which is responsible for regulating emotions.

Scientists from the University of Melbourne conducted a study involving 137 adolescents aged 11 to 14. The experiment assessed the children's reactions to stressful situations, such as discussing chores or limiting internet use. Participants' behavior was assessed using specialized scales, followed by MRIs to assess the condition of their brain structures.

The results showed that adolescents with high aggression exhibit an enlarged amygdala, a structure responsible for impulsive reactions and emotional outbursts. Concurrently, in some boys, a decrease in the size of the anterior cingulate cortex and orbitofrontal cortex in the left hemisphere was associated with irritability, anxiety, and a tendency toward dysphoric mood.

Scientists emphasize that many adolescent difficulties are related to the immaturity of brain structures. The limbic system and cerebral cortex do not fully develop until age 20, so the inability to control emotions at an early age is a natural developmental stage.

However, there is a risk that some children will retain these structural features of their brain into adulthood. The researchers believe that an enlarged amygdala and asymmetrical cortex may contribute to the development of depression, anxiety, and personality disorders.

The study's conclusion emphasizes the importance of early support for adolescents: creating a safe and stable environment, emotional support from parents and specialists, and teaching self-control skills can reduce aggression and anxiety, helping the child develop harmoniously.
