India has reached an agreement with the United States to expand trade and economic cooperation, which involves significant changes in the structure of its imports. In particular, the country has not only agreed to stop purchasing Russian oil, but also to increase the volume of purchases of American oil and other goods from the United States.
The agreement is reported by Reuters. The agreement covers not only the energy sector, but also defense products, aviation equipment, technologies and agricultural goods. In addition, India has agreed to partially open its traditionally heavily protected agricultural market to American producers.
US President Donald Trump officially announced the conclusion of a trade agreement with India on Monday. According to him, Washington will reduce tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18%. In exchange, New Delhi pledged to stop buying Russian oil and reduce trade barriers for American companies.
Trump also said that India had agreed to increase purchases of American goods by up to $500 billion. The list of products included energy, coal, high-tech, agricultural goods and other industrial products from the United States.
An Indian government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the country was ready to import American goods, including telecommunications equipment and pharmaceuticals, as part of the agreement. New Delhi also offered limited access to the domestic market for certain types of agricultural products, fulfilling its commitments.
In addition, India reduced tariffs on imported cars, which was one of the key steps to meet Washington's urgent demands and conclude the first phase of a trade agreement between the two countries.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also confirmed that the agreements had been reached. In his post on the social network X, he announced the agreement on a trade deal with the United States, without disclosing additional details, but emphasizing its strategic importance for bilateral relations.
