  • Cuba condemns Trump's threats to cut off oil supplies

    Опубликовано: 2026-02-02 15:00:33

Cuba has reacted sharply to US President Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs to block all oil supplies to the island. The government called such measures blackmail and coercion that will further complicate the lives of Cubans.

This was reported by Bloomberg, noting that Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Friday on the X platform described the US actions as "fascist, criminal and genocidal", aimed at satisfying the personal interests of a certain group.

According to Trump, the US administration plans to impose punitive sanctions on countries that supply fuel to Cuba. This decision is aimed, in particular, at Mexico, which after the arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro on January 3 became the main supplier of fuel to the island.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said earlier this week that her country's humanitarian aid to Cuba would be continued. She is expected to comment on Trump’s threat at a daily press briefing later on Friday.

Cuba is currently suffering its worst economic crisis since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Analysts who track oil tankers say it has less than three weeks of fuel left, threatening to cripple transportation, agriculture and other critical sectors.

European diplomats have warned that the U.S. pressure campaign could trigger a humanitarian crisis in the country of about 10 million people, which experts say could lead to a mass exodus or even famine.
