From the beginning of February 2026, Ukraine will receive additional opportunities to import natural gas from the territory of Poland. The operators of the gas transmission systems of the two countries have agreed on a phased expansion of the capacity of this route, which should strengthen the energy stability of the state.
The Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, announced the agreements reached. According to him, the relevant decision was agreed between the Polish GTS operator Gaz-System and the "GTS Operator of Ukraine".
According to the plan, by the end of April 2026, the capacity of the gas import route from Poland to Ukraine will increase from 15.3 million cubic meters to 18.4 million cubic meters per day. The capacity increase will take place in stages, starting in February.
The Minister emphasized that expanding import capacity is part of a systemic policy to strengthen Ukraine's energy security. It is not only about increasing the physical volume of supplies, but also about reducing risks by diversifying gas supply routes.
According to Shmyhal, the Polish route plays a particularly important role, as it provides access to various sources of gas, in particular liquefied natural gas, which comes through European infrastructure. That is why this route remains one of the key ones for Ukraine's import operations.
The minister also cited data for 2025, which confirm the significance of the Polish corridor. Last year, 2.1 billion cubic meters of gas were delivered to Ukraine through Poland, which accounted for more than 30% of the total import volume.
At the same time, about 600 million cubic meters of this volume fell on American LNG. This, according to the government, demonstrates the effectiveness of cooperation with European partners and the strategic importance of developing Western gas supply routes.
