  • EU finally bans Russian gas imports: deadlines, fines and conditions

    Опубликовано: 2026-01-27 15:00:20

On January 26, the Council of the European Union adopted a decision on a complete ban on Russian gas imports. According to the resolution, supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia to the EU will be banned from January 1, 2027, and pipeline gas from September 30, 2027.

The document notes that all 27 EU member states have officially supported the gradual cessation of gas imports from the Russian Federation. The new rules also provide for effective monitoring of supplies and measures to diversify energy sources to ensure market stability.

In addition, EU countries are required to check the origin of gas before importing it to confirm the country of production of the blue fuel. This regulation is an important component of the REPowerEU strategy, the aim of which is to completely free the EU from dependence on Russian energy sources.

The ban will enter into force six weeks after the publication of the regulation. At the same time, a transition period will apply to existing contracts, which will limit the impact on energy prices and markets. Thus, a complete ban on LNG imports will come into effect from January 1, 2027, and pipeline gas from September 30, 2027.

Violations of the rules will be subject to significant fines: for individuals - from 2.5 million euros, for companies - from 40 million euros or up to 3.5% of the annual turnover of the enterprise, and in some cases - up to 300% of the contract amount.

By March 1, 2026, all EU countries must prepare plans to replace Russian gas and provide information on existing contracts, including oil imports. At the same time, in the event of a state of emergency and a threat to the security of supply, the European Commission will have the right to temporarily suspend the ban for up to four weeks.

Such measures demonstrate the EU's determination to reduce energy dependence on Russia and are simultaneously aimed at minimizing risks to the market and the continent's energy security.
