Poland intends to provide Ukraine with a defense loan, and the relevant intergovernmental agreement is planned to be signed in the first half of 2026. Currently, Kyiv and Warsaw are in the final stage of agreeing on all key parameters of the agreement, including financing conditions and directions for using the funds.
This was reported by the Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland Vasyl Bodnar in an interview with Ukrinform. According to him, the negotiation process has already entered its final phase, and the relevant departments of both countries are actively working on agreeing on the details.
The diplomat noted that the Ministries of Finance of Ukraine and Poland, as well as representatives of the Ministries of Defense and other institutions, are involved in the process. Their task is to form the substantive part of the agreement so that the loan funds are used as effectively as possible to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities and develop cooperation in the defense-industrial complex.
Vasyl Bodnar expressed hope that the signing of the agreement will take place in the first half of 2026. He emphasized that it is not only about financial support, but also about a strategic partnership in the field of security and defense.
Last year, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga reported that Kyiv had asked Warsaw to provide a loan of 120 million euros. These funds are planned to be used to purchase products from the Polish defense-industrial complex, which will also support Polish manufacturers.
Separately, the ambassador commented on the issue of implementing joint projects within the framework of the European SAFE initiative. According to him, Ukraine and Poland have already agreed on a list of promising projects and submitted it for consideration by the European Commission. It is expected that in March it will become known which projects will receive funding, after which the parties will be able to proceed to practical planning.
Vasyl Bodnar recalled that the SAFE initiative provides for the provision of loans for the production of defense products in the territory of EU countries with the possibility of involving third countries, in particular Ukraine. The implementation of such projects, according to him, will contribute to the creation of modern weapons systems, in particular ammunition, air defense systems and innovative defense technologies, which will be beneficial to both Ukraine and Poland.
