US President Donald Trump announced his intention to impose 25% tariffs on goods from countries that maintain trade relations with Iran. The corresponding statement became another signal of increased economic pressure from Washington on states cooperating with the Islamic Republic.
The American leader announced his decision on the social network Truth Social. In the post, he clearly outlined the position of the US administration on any forms of business with Iran, emphasizing the tough and uncompromising nature of the new approach.
According to Trump, from now on, any country that conducts commercial activities with Iran will be obliged to pay a 25% tariff on any business with the United States of America. Thus, tariffs are actually becoming a tool of influence not only on Tehran, but also on its international trading partners.
The US President separately stressed that the decision was not subject to review. In his message, he stated that “this order is final,” making it clear that the administration does not plan to soften or postpone the introduction of the relevant restrictions.
The reaction of the international community was not slow. According to Reuters, the Chinese Embassy in Washington sharply criticized Donald Trump’s approach, calling it unacceptable and contrary to the principles of international trade.
The Chinese diplomatic establishment stated that Beijing would take “all necessary measures” to protect its own interests. It also emphasized its disagreement with “any illegal unilateral sanctions and long-sleeve jurisdiction,” referring to the extraterritorial nature of the American restrictions.
