Ukraine has determined the winner of the competition for the conclusion of a production sharing agreement for the development of a lithium deposit in the Kirovograd region. This is the Dobra site, which is considered one of the largest lithium deposits in the country. The winner of the competition was a consortium led by the Irish company TechMet.
The New York Times reports this, citing two members of the competition committee. According to them, it was the proposal of this consortium that was recognized as the best according to the results of the selection, which paves the way for attracting large-scale investments in the extraction of strategic raw materials.
The Dobra deposit is of particular importance given the global demand for lithium, which is a key component for the production of electric batteries, in particular for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. That is why this asset is considered an important element of the future development of "green" energy and high-tech industries.
At the same time, as the publication notes, the decision of the tender commission still requires formal approval by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. Despite this, Ukrainian officials, referred to by the New York Times, state that the deal has actually already been agreed, and further steps are more of a procedural nature.
The publication pays special attention to the composition of the winning consortium. According to the newspaper, it has close ties to the administration of US President Donald Trump. In particular, the consortium includes Ronald Lauder - the heir to the Estée Lauder cosmetics empire, a long-time acquaintance and friend of Trump since college, as well as a well-known sponsor of the US Republican Party.
In addition, TechMet’s largest shareholder is the U.S. government agency DFC (U.S. International Development Finance Corporation), which underscores the U.S. strategic interest in access to critical mineral resources.
The tender conditions stipulated a minimum investment in the project of $179 million. At the same time, one of the members of the tender committee, which voted on Thursday, January 8, reported that the TechMet consortium’s offer significantly exceeded the established minimum, which was one of the key arguments in favor of its victory.
