  • 70 million euros from Germany for Ukraine's energy resilience: how aid for critical infrastructure will be used

    Опубликовано: 2025-12-19 15:00:21

Germany has decided to provide Ukraine with additional financial support in the amount of 70 million euros to strengthen critical infrastructure. The funds will be directed primarily to the development of decentralized heat and electricity supply systems, which should increase the resilience of communities in the face of constant attacks on the energy sector.

According to the website of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the new funding should provide a quick and tangible effect for the population. According to the agency's estimates, in the short term this will allow about 2.6 million Ukrainians to receive heat, water and electricity.

German Minister for International Development and Cooperation Rim Alabali Radovan emphasized that for German residents, the lack of light or heating on frosty days is almost unthinkable. At the same time, for Ukrainians, power outages have become a difficult daily reality due to the war and systemic attacks on infrastructure.

She also emphasized that the current, already fourth winter of full-scale war, is the most difficult for Ukraine. That is why Germany is providing not declarative, but practical assistance, once again confirming its unwavering support for the Ukrainian state and its citizens.

According to the minister, Ukraine's energy sector remains a strategic target for attacks by the Russian Federation. At the same time, its stable operation is crucial for people to be able to stay in their homes, maintain basic living conditions and not leave the country due to humanitarian risks.

The main part of the funding — 50 million euros — will be directed to the purchase of equipment for communities. Through the German organization GIZ, local communities will receive hybrid generators, modular boiler rooms and container heating systems. Such equipment will allow for autonomous heat supply and electricity at the local level even in the event of damage to centralized networks.

Another 20 million euros are earmarked for supporting children and social institutions. The funds, which will be provided through UNICEF and the state development bank KfW, will be used to provide energy to about 1,300 educational institutions and ten hospitals. This will allow almost 400,000 children to continue their education in warm and safe conditions.

A separate area of funding concerns ensuring stable access to water. Part of the funds will be used to purchase powerful batteries for pumping stations, which will guarantee uninterrupted operation of water supply and sewage systems for about 100,000 Ukrainians even during long power outages.

The BMZ also emphasized that Germany's support for Ukraine will be long-term. In particular, it concerns further cooperation with the state operator Ukrenergo on stabilizing power grids, supplying spare parts, and reconstructing protective structures around substations to reduce the risks of new attacks.
