The European Union has responded to US President Donald Trump’s statement on the need to hold presidential elections in Ukraine, confirming its unwavering position on the legitimacy of the Ukrainian government and the conditions under which citizens can express their will. This was reported by “European Pravda”.
Speaking in Brussels, European Commission spokeswoman Anita Hipper stressed that Volodymyr Zelensky is the “democratically elected president of Ukraine”. She stressed that the next elections can only be held when security and legal conditions allow. In particular, Hipper recalled that the current situation is an emergency due to Russia’s ongoing full-scale aggression against Ukraine.
“We have already drawn attention to this issue, as these are exceptional times. In my opinion, President Zelensky is a democratically elected leader, and any elections can only be held when conditions allow this,” the European Commission representative emphasized. She also noted that the European Union remains consistent in supporting Ukraine, which is waging a defensive war against the Russian invasion.
The EU statement followed Donald Trump’s words on December 9. The US president said that Ukraine should hold presidential elections, as “they haven’t held them for a long time,” while suggesting that Volodymyr Zelensky could win. Trump also noted that, in his opinion, “this is an important time to hold elections.”
In his comments, the US president also touched on the broader topic of the war settlement. He said that he was disappointed with the Ukrainian leader’s position, claiming that Russia had agreed to his proposed plan to end the war, while Zelensky had allegedly not even read the document.
Against this background, the European Union clearly outlined its own approach: elections in Ukraine are possible only when the security situation and legislative conditions allow them to be democratic, transparent and participate in all citizens, regardless of their location.
