  • A New Approach to Preventing Depression in Women After Childbirth

    Опубликовано: 2025-11-16 15:28:10

Swiss scientists from the University of Basel have made an important discovery that could change the way we approach women's mental health after childbirth. The researchers found that the risk of developing depression is directly linked to levels of oxytocin, a hormone responsible for emotional stability, attachment, and joy.

A team led by Günter Meinschmidt analyzed the blood samples of 74 women over several months before and after childbirth. They found that those whose oxytocin levels declined in the final months of pregnancy were more likely to develop signs of depression just a couple of weeks after birth. This was the first confirmation that fluctuations in the hormone can serve as a precursor to emotional disturbances.

The scientists believe their discovery will help develop specialized tests to identify women at increased risk early. This will enable timely preventative measures, such as normalizing oxytocin levels with medication or non-pharmacological methods.

According to researchers, postpartum depression affects approximately one in five women. This period is considered one of the most vulnerable for mental health: emotional stress, hormonal changes, and lack of sleep can trigger serious disorders.

Furthermore, the effects of depression affect not only the mother but also the child. A lack of emotional connection can impact the baby's development, perception of the world, and sense of security. Therefore, experts emphasize the importance of timely diagnosis and support for young women.

The admission by prominent women of their experiences with postpartum depression has helped to de-stigmatize the topic. Now, thanks to new scientific data, it is possible not only to treat such conditions, but also to prevent them before the first symptoms appear.
