Many women planning to become mothers don't consider how their habit of starting the morning with a cup of coffee can affect their bodies. Meanwhile, scientists are increasingly warning that caffeine can reduce the chances of conception. This popular stimulant, found not only in coffee but also in tea, energy drinks, and chocolate, affects the reproductive system much more powerfully than initially thought.
Studies have shown that drinking more than four cups of coffee a day can reduce the chances of conception by approximately a quarter. Scientists explain this by the fact that caffeine reduces muscle activity in the fallopian tubes. These tubes are where the egg travels from the ovary to the uterus, where fertilization occurs. Disruption of this mechanism makes conception less likely.
The movement of the egg is a complex process involving tiny villi and muscle contractions of the fallopian tubes. Caffeine can weaken the cells responsible for these contractions. As a result, the egg cannot reach the uterus in a timely manner, reducing the chances of meeting the sperm.
It's important to note that caffeine isn't only found in coffee. Carbonated drinks, chocolate, tea, and especially energy drinks also contain significant amounts. Therefore, even if a woman limits her coffee intake but consumes other stimulants, the effect on the body can be similar.
Doctors recommend that women planning a pregnancy temporarily abstain from caffeinated beverages or minimize their consumption. Alternatively, herbal teas or simply plain water can be used, as they don't have a negative impact on the reproductive system and help maintain fluid balance.
Moderation is the key to health. Completely eliminating caffeine isn't necessary if a woman drinks one cup of coffee in the morning and doesn't overindulge in other caffeine sources. However, being mindful of your diet and carefully monitoring your body's response can help create a more favorable environment for conception.
