In July 2025, the updated ranking of higher education institutions in the world, Ranking Web of Universities, better known as Webometrics, was published. This authoritative ranking, compiled by the Spanish research group Cybermetrics Lab, covered more than 31 thousand universities from more than 200 countries. The new edition of the ranking also includes leading Ukrainian universities.
In the world ranking, Harvard University (USA) took first place, as in previous years. Stanford University was in second place, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology took third place. Among Ukrainian higher education institutions, the highest place was taken by Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, which took 1612th place in the global ranking.
A well-known Ukrainian scientist and rector of Kherson State University, Oleksandr Spivakovsky, has published a list of the thirty best Ukrainian universities according to Webometrics. The list includes both classical and technical and medical universities from different regions of the country.
In second place among Ukrainian universities is Sumy State University (1841st place in the world), followed by Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (2037). The top five also includes Lviv Polytechnic (2213) and V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (2234).
Among other Ukrainian universities that made it into the top 30 Webometrics, it is worth noting the Precarpathian National University named after Vasyl Stefanyk (2438), the National University of Life Resources and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine (2599), the Kyiv Aviation Institute (2616), the Ivan Franko University of Lviv (2979), the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute (3439), and the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University (3889).
The list also included medical universities (Ternopil, Lviv, Bogomolets National), a number of regional universities, and even the Interregional Academy of Personnel Management. The last place in the Ukrainian thirty was taken by Kherson State University, which was ranked 4745th in the world.
The Webometrics ranking evaluates universities by the level of their scientific visibility on the Internet, the citation rate of publications, and their overall presence in the global academic environment. Although this ranking does not directly reflect the quality of teaching or the material and technical base, it demonstrates the activity of universities in scientific communication and the digital space.
