Ukraine reduced electricity imports by a third, while exports doubled

In April 2025, electricity imports to Ukraine significantly decreased, while exports, on the contrary, showed significant growth. This is evidenced by data from energy monitoring published by ExPro.

During April, Ukraine imported 187 thousand megawatt-hours of electricity, which is 31% less than in March. The highest level of imports was recorded on April 11 - over 20 thousand megawatt-hours. However, after April 20, supplies decreased significantly, which indicates changes in the balance of supply and demand on the domestic energy market.

For comparison, in March 2025, electricity imports to Ukraine amounted to 272 thousand megawatt-hours, which was 11% more than in February (244 thousand MWh). Thus, April became the first month in the last quarter when a significant decrease in electricity purchases abroad was recorded.

Against the background of a decrease in imports, Ukrainian electricity exports to other countries have significantly increased. According to the results of April, it exceeded 150 thousand megawatt-hours - almost twice as much as in March. The most intensive export days were April 22-25, when the daily volume of supplies reached more than 11 thousand megawatt-hours.

The main export destinations remain Hungary and Moldova. Hungary's share was 38% of the total export volume, Moldova's - 35%. This confirms the stable demand for Ukrainian electricity in the region, as well as the growing role of Ukraine as an exporter in the context of energy adaptation to new challenges.

The dynamics of April demonstrate the ability of the Ukrainian power system to respond flexibly to external and internal factors, balancing domestic consumption needs with opportunities for earning on external markets. It is expected that as weather conditions improve and generation stabilizes, Ukraine will continue to increase its export potential.
