Turkey has taken a significant step in its foreign policy strategy by officially applying to join BRICS, an international alliance of countries with rapidly growing markets. This was reported by the Bloomberg agency, citing anonymous sources close to the administration of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to sources, this move is part of Turkey's broader strategy to change the vector of its geopolitical orientation. Erdogan's government believes that the global center of gravity is gradually shifting from traditional economically developed countries to new market players. The application to join BRICS underlines Turkey's desire to actively participate in the multipolar world, while maintaining its important role in NATO.
According to the agency, Turkey submitted an application to join BRICS a few months ago. This decision, according to analysts, is partly caused by Ankara's frustration with the multi-year stalemate in the negotiations on joining the European Union. Turkey is looking for new opportunities to strengthen its international positions and economic ties.
In addition, Turkey's decision to join BRICS can be seen as a reflection of its difficult relations with some NATO members. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Ankara has maintained close ties with Moscow, causing some disagreements with other members of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Despite active diplomatic steps, both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey and the presidential administration refused to comment on this issue. There are currently no official statements regarding Turkey's application to join the BRICS, which adds to the mystery of this move.
Thus, against the background of changes in the global political landscape, Turkey is looking for new ways to strengthen its position in the international arena, trying to find a balance between its obligations to NATO and the desire to participate in the formation of new world alliances.
