Ukraine plans to restore an additional 3 GW of energy generation by the end of the year: what has already been done and what steps lie ahead

Ukraine has a real opportunity to restore almost 3 GW of electric generation by the end of 2024, if the necessary financing is provided and appropriate repair works are carried out. This was announced by Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko during a briefing for international partners dedicated to the preparation of the Ukrainian energy sector for the autumn-winter period.

According to Galushchenko, the key role in supporting the energy system is now played by gas combustion plants, which are already working thanks to the help of international partners. They provide distributed generation and help stabilize energy supplies in the face of constant shelling from Russia.

The minister also emphasized that one of the main tasks for today is the restoration and repair of generation facilities that were damaged by Russian missile strikes. In addition, an important aspect is the implementation of distributed generation projects, which will provide critical infrastructure with backup power sources.

Galushchenko noted that the Ministry of Energy actively collects and updates data on the needs of the energy sector, especially in the context of preparations for winter. Due to the large-scale destruction and continued shelling, energy needs are very significant. Therefore, prioritizing these needs and seeking financial support from international partners is critical to adding capacity to the power system and ensuring reliable power supply for key facilities.

In addition, the Ministry has a special technical group that works closely with energy companies and local administrations. It provides technical support, analyzes projects, forms a list of urgent needs and promotes their implementation.

To date, we have already received information from 18 regions regarding distributed generation projects, which allows us to effectively analyze existing projects and correctly form requests for the necessary equipment for their implementation. This is an important step on the way to stability and energy security of Ukraine in the conditions of war.
