The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released a new report calling for a significant electricity tax on cryptocurrency mining companies and data centers that support artificial intelligence (AI). According to the IMF report, it is proposed to establish a tax rate of 85% on the consumed electricity in these industries.

The report notes that the AI sector and the mining industry currently consume about 2% of global electricity. It is predicted that this figure could increase to 3.5% over the next three years. At the same time, by 2027, these industries could together account for 1% of total global carbon emissions.

One of the main factors behind the introduction of the tax is that AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT consume 10 times more electricity than a traditional Google search engine due to the large amount of data processing in data centers.

The IMF believes that the introduction of an electricity tax can significantly reduce carbon emissions and provide additional revenues to state budgets. The tax is expected to generate $5.2 billion from cryptocurrency companies and $18 billion from the AI sector annually.

Fund experts believe that this tax will encourage companies to use electricity more responsibly and pay more attention to environmental issues. The IMF hopes that the introduction of such measures will contribute to a more sustainable development of technological industries and reduce their negative impact on the environment.
