Detox and the liver: myths and reality

02 мар, 08:48

Hepatologists, specialists in liver disease, warn those who intend to apply detox diets after the New Year's holidays: it can be harmful. According to a survey conducted by Hepatitis Australia, about 70% of respondents believe that detox diets are beneficial to health. However, experts claim otherwise.

Prof. Simon Strasser notes that diets and liver cleanses do not remove fat from this organ, as it does not accumulate toxins. He advises focusing on eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight and moderate alcohol consumption year-round to keep the liver healthy.

Several articles by Professor Strasser emphasize that drastic weight loss can increase fat accumulation in the liver and lead to fatty liver disease, which can have serious consequences such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.

She also notes that excessive alcohol consumption can also lead to similar consequences.

The executive director of Hepatitis Australia, Helen Tyrrell, warns that detox diets won't get you closer to liver health as many may think. Instead, it's important to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout the year.
