Why similar people find it difficult to live together

A study conducted by scientists from Columbia University has revealed an interesting aspect of relationships between people. It is generally accepted that similar views and interests contribute to a strong relationship, but the results of this study show that agreement on all issues does not always ensure comfort in a relationship. Researchers gave the example of Hollywood stars Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, whose characters were similar, but this did not prevent them from divorcing because of eccentricity and temper.

As part of the study, more than 700 men and women took part in a three-year survey in which they were asked questions about their life together, intimacy, relationship satisfaction, thoughts about breaking up, shared goals and interests.

The results showed that the happiest and most stable couples were those where the partners were not overly close or, conversely, too different. Psychologists concluded that it is important to find a middle ground in emotional closeness with your partner.

David Frost, the lead author of the study, noted that the happiness of a couple does not depend on the amount of time spent together or common interests. The important thing is to be comfortable. The desire for greater closeness or, conversely, distance can negatively affect the relationship.

These findings apply not only to romantic relationships, but also to relationships between parents and children, coworkers and friends. Thus, the importance of finding a balance in emotional intimacy for happy and long-term relationships is emphasized.
