Microsoft has announced that the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is demanding an additional tax payment of $28.9 billion, together with penalties and interest for the period from 2004 to 2013.

According to Reuters, Microsoft claims that the tax dispute arose between the company and the US IRS over how the corporation's profits were distributed among different countries and jurisdictions.

The IRS neither confirms nor denies its tax analysis of any of the taxpayers due to US law.

According to an official document published on October 11, Microsoft is working to develop a consensus with the IRS on tax issues from 2004 to 2013. The IRS believes that Microsoft should pay about $29 billion, as well as the amount of penalties and accumulated interest for this period.

It is noted that Microsoft claims that it has already paid up to $10 billion, which were not taken into account by the IRS.

Microsoft intends to appeal the IRS's decision, and this process may take several years and may eventually lead to litigation. The company is ready to defend its position in this tax dispute.
