The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted Draft Law No. 5839 on the regulation of the circulation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This document was supported by 276 MPs and represents an important step in the control of genetic engineering activities in Ukraine.
This law, officially titled "On State Regulation of Genetic Engineering Activities and State Control over the Circulation of Genetically Modified Organisms and Genetically Modified Products to Ensure Food Security," was introduced to the Verkhovna Rada and has been under consideration for about a year.
One of the key aspects of this law is the definition and regulation of terms related to genetically modified organisms. In particular, the law establishes definitions of terms such as "genetically modified organism," "genetically modified products," and "GM products as food." It introduces mandatory state registration of GMOs and establishes transparent rules for their circulation.
The draft law also amended restrictions on the cultivation and import of genetically modified corn. Additionally, it establishes a five-year ban on the cultivation of genetically modified sugar beet and rapeseed.
The main purpose of this law is to fulfill the obligations assumed by Ukraine under the Association Agreement with the European Union. It is aimed at decriminalizing the market for genetically modified organisms and creating clear rules for GMO-related business activities.
The adoption of this law opens a new era in the regulation of genetic engineering activities in Ukraine and will help ensure the country's food security.
