Occupiers tortured 78-year-old writer and journalist Yevhen Bal

The writer lived in the village of Melekino near Mariupol. The officer had given more than 30 years of service on submarines of the Northern and Pacific fleets and had gone on autonomous voyages more than once. During the Russo-Ukrainian war he wrote many works of fiction and material on the hybrid warfare.

These monsters came to the writer's premises on 18 March. During a search of his home, they found commemorative photos with Ukrainian defenders, an NSPU membership card and other "evidence of fascism". For three days he was brutally abused.

"He confirmed that he had been beaten over the three days and there were serious injuries, but assured that he would definitely recover." The 78-year-old officer was released on 21 March by the occupiers with the words ""we do not fight with veterans of the USSR Navy"". But, unfortunately, Yevhen Bal was unable to recover from the inhumane abuse - his heart stopped on 2 April. He did not live six days to celebrate his 79th birthday.
